Introduction: School of Chinese Language and Literature
The School of Chinese Language and Literature (SCLL) consists of the Chinese Department, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs for Chinese students, the Department of Chinese as a Foreign Language, providing undergraduate programs to international students, and the Chinese Language Training Center, specialized in non-degree education. The School has a group of teachers with rich professional experience, training nearly 1,300 students, with nearly 600 Chinese students and nearly 700 students from overseas.
So far, the School is authorized to confer the first-level discipline Master Degree for Chinese Language and Literature, which has five MA programs, namely Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Chinese Language Studies, Comparative Literature and World Literature,and Chinese Ancient Literature respectively, and owns two PhD programs, namely Comparative Literature and Cross-culture Study as well as Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. All the programs are open to international students.
Academic Program 1- Non-Degree Programs for International Students
Programs for General Non-Degree Students
The Advanced Programs of Chinese Training Center begins classes in the both spring and autumn semesters each year, with the curriculum lasting 18 weeks each semester. Based on the Chinese level of students, preliminary level, intermediate level and advanced level are divided, ten sub-levels in total. The teaching objects cover from the zero-basis starters to those who have mastered over 8,000 words and can skillfully use Chinese. The courses are characterized by focusing on the training of listening and speaking and teaching in small-sized classes, with about 15 students in each class.
Chinese Training Center sets 2 to 3 compulsory courses and 20 or so elective courses every semester for students who are on different levels. The compulsory courses consist of Chinese, Oral Practice, Reading and Writing Practice. Meanwhile, aiming at the students on different levels, the School sets up corresponding elective courses, including preliminary reading, preliminary writing, preliminary audiovisual-oral practice, intermediate audiovisual practice, intermediate newspaper reading, advanced writing, introduction to Chinese speech, introduction to Chinese characters, idiomatic expressions and other courses for improving language skills; also including General Introduction of China, Chinese Popular Culture, cooking culture and Travel in China for students experiencing Chinese culture; as well as the know-how courses, such as Chinese-Japanese Translation and Business Chinese; at the same time, the School also opens new HSK tutorial classes for students on different levels.
Besides classroom teaching, Chinese Training Center also arranges colorful activities for improving language skills. Each semester will witness the holding of Talent Contest, Composition Contest, Fan Games, Video Contest, International Sales Gatherings and New Year’s Party, etc., which not only extends the classroom learning, but also enriches the campus life. Each semester, we will organize the overseas students to participate in the social practices related to “Language-Culture-Society” both in and outside Beijing, including the panel discussions with Chinese, visiting companies and places of interests, watching various performances and exhibitions, to let students have an extensive contact with Chinese people and make a profound understanding of Chinese society.

Special Training Programs
The Project Division of the Chinese Language Training Center is meanwhile in charge of special training programs for international students. The training focus, length and organization are adjustable to meet different needs and to achieve the best result. The Division has launched the following projects: MBA Training Program of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, USA, Business Chinese Training Program of the Deutscher Akademische Austausch Dient (DAAD), Chinese-Japanese Simultaneous Interpreting Training Program, Chinese Training Program for Law Enforcement Liaison Officers, Chinese Training Program of the Sapienza University of Rome, Chinese Language Training of EU Science and Technology Fellowship Program, China-EU Junior Managers Training program and China-EU Legal Chinese Training Program, etc. We sincerely welcome the relevant organizations and individuals to contact us through various ways, and being in line with your requirements, we can customize different special training programs.

⟡ Extensive cooperation and communication. Good cooperative and communicating relations are established with many universities and institutes around the world. So far, being the university undertaking the largest number of Confucius Institutes in China, Beijing Foreign Studies University has undertook 23 ones.
⟡ Diverse learning environment. Over 1,000 overseas students from almost 50 countries come here to learn Chinese each year. Academic Program 2- Bachelor Degree Programs for International Students
The Department of Chinese as a Foreign Language aims to produce undergraduate students with high proficiency in the Chinese language and culture. Its four-year undergraduate program enrolls international students every spring and autumn. Now there are nearly 400 students in the Department.
Started in 1992,our degree programs have seen a steady improvement in curriculum design, teaching methodology, syllabus planning, assessment system, course management, etc. We attach importance not only to systematic learning, but also to the development of the students’ communicative competence. We offer five programs, namely, Chinese Language, Literature and Culture, Business, Chinese and English, and Chinese Language Teaching—all based on Chinese language learning.
The Department has long carried out academic exchange and cooperation with universities in Japan, Korea, Malaysia and other countries. Every year, we train students sent by the Japanese NPO International Education Sponsorship, Malaysian government and MARA Group. Besides, ISI International Chinese Institute Project, 3+1 Program of Kansai Gaidai University, Japan, 2+2 Program of Busan University of Foreign Studies, South Korea, 2+2 Program of Woosong University, South Korea, International Bachelor Project of Yeungjin College, South Korea, 2+2 Project of Daito Bunka University, Japan, 2+2 Study Abroad Program of Kansai Gaidai University, Japan as well as the Chinese Culture remote lectures themed as “Studying Abroad in Beijing”(initiated in the spring of 2010) to Japan Kansai Gaidai University are all well under way.
Up till now, more than 2,000 international students have graduated from DTCFL, who are now playing an active role all over the world in various fields such as education, culture, trade, diplomacy, etc. contributing to the cooperation and communication between China and other countries.
