Professor Shi Chunhong of Beijing Language and Culture University Gave Academic Lectures for Teachers and Students of SCLL

Time:2021-06-28

On the afternoon of June 17, 2021, Professor Shi Chunhong, doctoral supervisor of Beijing Language and Culture University and the chief editor of Language Teaching & Linguistic Studies, gave a lecture entitled "the Structure and Composition of Academic Competence" in the Wenhua Hall of School of Chinese Language and Literature(SCLL). The lecture was presided over by Professor Zhu Yong, the vice president of SCLL. More than 120 teachers and students attended the lecture.

Professor Shi, combining with his experience of study, research and guidance, launched the lecture from four aspects: "what is a graduate student?" "the structural dimension of academic ability" "some confusions in the development of academic ability" and "the basic path to develop academic ability".

Professor Shi told the students that postgraduates should base themselves on academic research and "see the world from academic perspective and turn the world into academic". Only by truly diving into the academic field can we have a spiritual dialogue with the world. Professor Shi believes that the structural dimensions of graduate students’ academic ability mainly include: rigorous thinking ability, thorough understanding ability, acute judgment ability, rich imagination ability, standardized operation ability and accurate expression ability.

In view of some confusions in the development of graduate students' academic ability, especially the confusions about "problem consciousness", he proposed that graduate students should have the ability to distinguish different levels of problems. When facing the "immediate problem", we should learn to trace the source and gradually rise from "within the material" to "above the material" and "outside the material", so as to answer the "immediate problem" more comprehensively. In the end, he summarized the basic path of the cultivation of graduate students’ academic ability into three goals, two aspects and three strategies, encouraging students to read academic classics, hoping students pay attention to the cultivation of academic thinking and learn the ability to deconstruct knowledge, so as to achieve the goal of doing anything by analogy. He has also proposed that academic research should not lack the training of academic writing.

In the end, professor Zhu spoke highly of professor Shi's lecture with four key words: "humor" "critical thinking" "profound" and "feelings", and hoped that students would enjoy the feeling of "listening to the gentleman is better than reading ten years' books". Professor Shi's lecture was humorous, insightful and enlightening. After the lecture, many students still had something more to discuss with the teacher.
