On the afternoon of April 13th, 2021, the appointment ceremony and academic report of visiting professor Fu Gang, the special professor of Boya Stystem from Chinese Department of Peking University, was held in the lecture hall on the third floor of the Library of BFSU. The leaders attending the appointment ceremony and report meeting include Professor Yuan Jun, Director of Academic Committee of BFSU, He Hui, Party Secretary of SCLL, Dean Zhan Furui, Executive Dean Zhang Xiaohui, etc. The appointment ceremony and lecture were presided over by Professor Wei Chongxin, Director of Academic Committee of SCLL.
First of all, Director Yuan Jun awarded the letter of appointment to Professor Fu Gang and delivered a speech. Director Yuan reviewed the development of SCLL in recent years, and mentioned the significance of Chinese subjects to BFSU. He stressed that "without good Chinese subjects, there would be no good foreign language subjects." As SCLL is developing to the next level, the appointment of Professor Fu Gang has brought new vitality to the long-term development of the School.
After the appointment ceremony, the students and teachers of SCLL listened to Professor Fu's lecture: My Attitude and Working Methods About the Study of Ancient Literature —— Taking the Study of Selected Literature(Wen Xuan) and New Songs From a Jade Terrace(Yutaixinyong) As an Example. Mr. Fu first addressed the origin of himself and ancient literature, the development of ancient Chinese literature and how to choose the right direction in this field. And then he pointed out five main research methods: First, study the phenomenon and formation of literature, explore the internal laws and connections, and discuss the causes of the phenomenon on the basis of respecting historical facts. Second, draw a conclusion from the historical materials on the basis of document and textual criticism, and do not impose personal opinions on the historical materials. Third, respect academic tradition and lay a solid academic foundation. Fourth, combine the study of literary history with the study of Confucian classics and history, taking Confucian classics and history as the foundation, and do not divide the subject field forcibly. Fifth, keep being interested and enthusiastic in research, and keep being fresh and creative. As for the atmosphere of "emphasis on theory over literature" in academia, Mr. Fu put forward that important conclusion that "all views come from literature ", and hopes that both young scholars engaged in ancient literature research and young students interested in academic research should have a better understanding of human feelings and human nature in order to have higher level of research.
Finally, Professor Wei Chongxin made a wonderful summary of Professor Fu Gang's lecture, and emphasized once again that scholarship should pay attention to documentation with a solid and assiduous spirit of scholarship. After the meeting, the attending teachers and students all said that Professor Fu Gang's lecture was so sincere that showed the rigorous attitude of ancient literature scholars and their sincerity in learning. For students majoring in Chinese, Professor Fu Gang's lecture is not only of great academic significance, but also of humanistic enlightenment.
